MGM Officially Shuts Down The Stargate And The Franchise

Its official, fans hoping there would be a Stargate Universe movie, or any continuation of the series will not get what they are looking for.

Executive producer Brad Wright shared the bad news with fans at the Vancouver creation event on Wednesday, which has finally begun the official mourning of the spin off.

“To quote a castmate: Finding out there will be no SGU, [‘Stargate: Atlantis’ and [‘Stagate SG-1’] movie was ‘like getting cancelled all over again,” SGU star David Blue shared on Twitter Sunday afternoon. “I can’t imagine not playing Eli. We all hoped a movie would allow us the chance to play together again. It was an amazing crew, cast and team.”

Reports are that many of the cast and crew learned of the show’s final fate on Saturday, with Brad tasked to share the bad news with fans on Sunday.

The announcement however goes far beyond Stargate Universe and includes the rest of the television franchise as well.

MGM before its huge uphill financial struggle and bankruptcy re-organisation had made two SG1 movies, and have promised an Atlantis movie to follow up the events of the Pegasus crew returning to earth at the end of season 5. But now it seems that all movies have been killed off.

Brad has fought long and hard, but financing has fallen through and we’ve hit a dead end,” actor Brian J. Smith told fans on Twitter. “Looks like the end of the road for Stargate.”

But Smith had some optimism.

“That’s not to say that Stargate could [not] re-emerge later on down the road in some form, but for the foreseeable future, this is it. Pretty crazy,” he said. “Very saddened by the news, but we’re insanely proud of our show and grateful for the fans who have been so kind to us. What a ride.”

Following this news the Stargate Archive would like to re-assure all fans that the site will be remaining open, regardless of the official cancellation of the franchise. Nothing will change, we will continue to update the site until the very end and bring you any news as and when it breaks.

  1. Thanks for remaining open. Kind of like life jacket. Helps give us time to adjust. BW stated that once MGM gets their TV department back up and running with the reorganization hopefully someone will see the value in the Stargate franchise.
