MGM Stands On The Brink Of Bankruptcy

Published by Stargate Archive Team under News

Financial strife has been rife in the realm of the Stargate franchise, not only has Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection it looks like MGM studios will soon be following their path.

MGM have been looking to restructure their $3.7 billion debt levels for some time, however the struggle hasn’t abated it looks increasingly likely the firm will file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the coming weeks if a potential buyer is not found.

The Hollywood reporter is quoted

With MGM debt recently trading at 60 cents on the dollar that would mean the studio would have to sell for more than $2.2 billion to fully pay off lenders. But almost nobody sees the Lion fetching that sort of money…

If a top bid for MGM fails to find enough support among its more than 140 lenders, the only other option would be a debt restructuring. That probably would include a pre-packaged bankruptcy reorganization by which lenders would morph into owners and present owners would see their stakes heavily diluted.

What does this for the future of the Stargate Franchise? Currently production costs are shared between MGM and SyFy, so any potential buyer of MGM may decide to axe Stargate Universe after its second season depending on how DVD sales play out.

Of course the studio may decide to cancel production on Stargate Universe Season two before it even begins, especially when considering the recent Blu-Ray 1.0 release failed to make the top 100 list over at Amazon.

Stay tuned for further information as and when it breaks.

15-Year-Old Creates Stunning Stargate Panorama Out Of LEGOs

Published by Stargate Archive Team under News

Like most 15 year olds, the most many of us could make out of LEGOs was a gun, and even then, you probably wouldn’t have been able to recognize it. Luckily, some 15-year-olds are a heck of a lot more talented than I was, like Sven Junga, who used LEGOs to create not only a spaceship—the Daedalus from Stargate Atlantis—but also an amazing diorama of the ship landing.

And it turns out that’s not the only sci-fi artifact re-created by Junga. Check out his Flickr feed for more of his awesome LEGO pics.

John Scalzi Will Be Back For Stargate Universe Season Two

Published by Stargate Archive Team under News

It’s official John Scalzi will be staying on for the second season of Stargate Universe in his ‘Creative Consultant’ role. He’s already been chatting with producers and giving his notes on already outlines episodes.

John is quoted as saying:

I’m very glad to continue in this gig because on a personal level it’s one of the most fun gigs I’ve had. Krissy has noted to me that when I talk to her about what I do on the show, the expression I get is almost exactly like that of a ten-year-old boy talking about a favorite toy. I won’t deny it, although maybe I’d quibble that it’s not a toy, it’s a seekrit club I belong to, in which we build spaceships out of cardboard boxes and aliens out of stuffed animals and then go zoom zoom zoom around the neighborhood.

By which I mean: One of the things I like most about it is that it is actually collaborative. Most of what I do is largely me sitting off by myself, so doing something where I get work from others, do my part and then send it off to someone else is a good creative experience for me. Especially when I really like the end result, which I have with SG:U.

Speaking of which, I’m supposed to have notes to the show today. Excuse me, please.

Claudia Black To Feature In Line Of New Comics

Published by Stargate Archive Team under News

Dynamite Entertainment is set to release a new comic series about the sexiest and funniest star of the Stargate franchise Vala Mal Doran who was played by the multi talented actress Claudia Black.

There will be an introduction by Claudia as well, so we will have another opportunity to see Claudia Black involved in comics after the successful return of Aeryn and Crichton in the comic series developed by Boom! studios last year.

This comic is written by Brandon Jerwa and Cezar Rezak and the story is about the years when Vala was acting as a free agent in the intergalactic underworld. While the ever-growing Lucian Alliance attempts to recruit her, Vala puts together an Ocean’s Eleven-style team of freelancers (though her team numbers around 5 people) to help her track down a mysterious sentient plant believed to be a source of great power.

The cover is still a mystery that Dynamite is going to clear up soon.

The comic will be released in UK in May but you can preorder it for £2.65 at the official Forbidden Planet store.
